# Set the headcount and the budget

Lesson 1 of [Plan a Group Meal and Budget](https://dishdirectory.com/academy/plan-a-group-meal-and-budget.md), 14 minutes.

Start with the number of guests. Every other choice depends on it.

## Headcount first

Fix the headcount before you pick a restaurant. A small room cannot seat a large group. For a group of more than eight, call the restaurant, even if it takes online bookings. Online systems often cap party size.

## A per-person budget

The entree price is not the cost of the meal. Drinks, starters, tax and tip add to it, and together they can add a lot. Set a per-person budget that includes all of them.

Then multiply the per-person figure by the headcount. Add a margin for extra orders. The guide gives ten percent as an example.

## Shortlist three

Pick three restaurants that pass four filters: the headcount, the budget, the dietary needs and the booking rules. Then choose among the three.

## Book early

For a group of six or more, book at least a week ahead.
